Looking to Employ someone . . .

Imagine walking into your workplace and seeing a person who has never had a job before, nor earned their own paycheck. Your first thought is, ‘Huh? Never earned a paycheck?’ And you begin to think back through all of your years of work experience, and the years of receiving a check...and how you’ve spent that money on necessities; like a house or car, food, the new DVD that just came out this past Tuesday. How different would your life be if you hadn’t earned a paycheck? How different can you make someone else’s life?

It’s simple, really. And …Rewarding!

We aren’t asking you to hire anyone off the streets, quite the opposite.  We want you to hire the right person for your job opening, we may have the best candidate and we may not.  But...if we do - it is a win, win!

What is Supported Employment?
It is a unique employment service for individuals, who, because of the level of their disability, require personalized initial and, at times, ongoing support to succeed and progress in a competitive work environment.

Supported Employment is paid, competitive employment for people, who because of their disability, have not been able to obtain and succeed in traditional employment opportunities.  Supported Employment can and does occur in a variety of normal, integrated business environment (e.g. retail jobs, house cleaning, general laborer, fast food, etc.)

Supported Employment means having a job in the community while also receiving some assistance from an Employment Specialist or natural supports (friends, co-workers).  The Specialist assists with intensive, systemic on-the-job training and consultation focused on building skills needed to meet employer productivity requirements, learning behaviors and acceptance in the social environment of the job setting.  As the worker’s proficiency increases, the number of hours of assistance diminishes over the first few weeks of employment.  After several weeks have elapsed, and the employee has stabilized in their new work environment, the Employment Specialist’s job is altered into a long-term, ongoing support mechanism (Follow Along) that averages 1-2 hours per week of support.

Follow Along supports assist the employee with periodic life changes and personal tensions that will cause job instability; e.g. remedial job training, transportation barriers.  The Employment Specialist works with the employee and the Employer to ensure the intensity and frequency of supports that are needed to maintain productivity and social inclusion.
