A huge shout out to the wonderful young adults at Vero Beach High School that formed a bike club, "Wheels for Charity" to raise money for local non profits. Their first fundraiser was a bike event held at the high school and they designated The Arc as the beneficiary. Thank you to all that sponsored this fun day. We see wonderful things in the future for these ambitious young adults!
Kudos to George Pellington, Margaret Keifer and the wonderful volunteers from First Methodist Church for inviting the individuals from our group homes for a special day of brunch, dancing and bingo! See slideshow above
UCF names The Arc Reef in Mosquito Bay after our individuals to honor those who worked so hard to make oyster mats. Our Oyster Mat Project is a win win. It improves the lives of our individuals while improving the water quality in the Indian River Lagoon. We are truly grateful to everyone who supported our Oyster Mat Project, and the amazing job our adults did in making them.
Tootsie Roll Drives a huge success again this year
Unfortunately due to COVID, we have not been able to stand outside the assorted businesses and help with the tootsie roll drive as we always have in the past. We are so grateful to the all of the Knights of Columbus for their efforts and years of dedication to people with disabilities in our community and carrying on with out our being able to join them.
Cement Patties are now replacing oyster mats!
Oyster patties are placed on degraded oyster reefs to provide stabilization to the reef and habitat for baby oysters (spat) to attach on and create new oyster reefs. Oyster patties are one of the many designs the CEE Lab at UCF is testing out in Mosquito Lagoon to facilitate oyster restoration. We have been testing oyster patties instead of using oyster mats because they are 100% biodegradable. Instead of being made from non-biodegradable plastics, oyster patties are designed to break down after time after being covered in oysters and creating a new oyster reef. See slideshow above.
The Arc is also growing Mangroves
We are always trying to help the community in any way we can. Check out the photos above to see how we are growing mangroves to be planted in the lagoon. See slideshow above.
